Summary of case: Brown has a wife and two children dependent on him and does not know of anyone who could carry on his business. ‘I am endeavouring to do what is in my part to assist the war by carrying on so far as I possibly can the practice of Captain W P Ness-Walker, so that when he returns there will be something for him to come back to.’ He is looking after the affairs of several men serving in the military. He states that his work as a Clerk to Hinderwell Urban District Council is a reserved occupation. The local tribunal granted exemption conditional on his following his present occupation and jointing the Volunteer Training Corps. Craig appeals against this decision to the local tribunal who rejected his claim. He then appealed to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal, who allowed his appeal and curtailed the exemption.
