Summary of case: Ridges was totally opposed to all war, had been a full member of the Society of Friends for two years but had attended meetings for some years prior. He believed he could better serve his country by helping his employer (Rowntree’s) produce “large supplies of valuable and good food.” He did not even want to do RAMC work but would serve in the Friends’ Ambulance Unit. Major Herbert objected to the local tribunal’s decision to grant an absolute exemption, on the grounds that he saw Ridges’ appeal was not “a matter of conscience but the fact is he does not like to be under the Military Authorities.”
