Summary of case: Brown appealed to the local tribunal on the grounds of serious hardship, as he would have to close the business if he was called up. Graham Craig, the recruiting officer, disagreed with the exemption given to Brown and stated his work was not in the national interest. The North Riding Appeal Tribunal gave Brown exemption to 1 Jul 1917. However, in July1917 BrownÂ’s case was reviewed as his wife was expecting a child at the beginning of July and Brown was ill with Hydrocele which, according to the medical report of Dr Wilson, had been cured with carbolic acid injections. The original call up date was extended by Graham Craig so that Brown would not be called up before 1 Aug 1917 as opposed to 1 Jul 1917.
