Summary of case: Wood is in charge of Messrs R Jackson and Son Ltd, general outfitters in Whitby. ‘The company was formed entirely for my benefit with an agreement to the effect that I was to eventually to become the sole proprietor.’ At present he is understaffed, having released his only assistant 15 months ago to join the colours, and fully intent if possible to keep the situation open for his return.’ He also states that the firm is the only outfitters for sailor’s and fisherman’s clothing in Whitby and district, and it would have to close if he joined the colours. He is also a special constable which he intends to continue as. The local tribunal gave him a conditional exemption dependent on his remaining in his current occupation and as a special constable. The military representative appealed against this as his work was not in the national interest.
