Summary of case: He had been granted exemption to 1 Jan 1917 but the local tribunal felt that a substitute could be found and that there were men in Scarborough capable of doing the work. The company argued that the work was specialist, including the maintenance of brakes on the trams, especially important in a hilly district like Scarborough. ‘It is expedient in the national interest that the man should instead of being employed in military service be engaged in other work in which he is habitually engaged.’
