Summary of case: Richard Freer Somerville is the only son of a widowed mother who is in poor health, she is also mentally frail. If he dies before the age of 21 he will forfeit a £1000 legacy which he regarded as “possible maintenance for his mother” who likes to live in comfort. If he dies before age 21, she will get only £100 of this and the remainder will go to his father’s brother and sister. He is willing to be an officer after the age of 21 if the war is still on
