Have no one to assist or carry on in my absence, consequently the business would be broken up, which would mean financial ruin to myself, wife and family who are all solely dependent upon it for our maintenance. Arranged to purchase business while in Canada and took possession – within a week of arriving in England – six weeks previous to outbreak of war. Already Recommended by local tribunal for non-combatant service.’ Stuart was member of the Plymouth Brethren and the local tribunal were convinced of his convictions on conscientious grounds.
