Summary of case: Hunton had sought exemption at the local tribunal, saying his trade of engineering was on the list of certified occupations. His appeal was dismissed so he appealed again, saying he was aggrieved by the local tribunal's decision. The local tribunal stated their reasons for dismissing the original appeal: ‘Ernest Hunton has worked for more as a painter than at the trade under which he claims exemption and was working as a painter at the date of National Registration Act [1915]. He left Armstrong’s on the 20th November last with a Clearance Certificate so that it is difficult to understand his reference to Sec 7 of the Munition Act. In the opinion of the [local] tribunal he only went to Armstrong to evade the military Service Act.’ considered, inter alia, Hunton only went to work at Armstrong’s to evade the Military Service Act.
