Summary of case: ‘The applicant repeats the application for exemption of their manager at York, which was made in August last, and when they were granted a long period of temporary exemption, with an intimation that they might apply again: Rowntrees state that it is impossible to get another manager for their York branch with the experience of Jones... it was suggested that a woman could take the job, but ‘About three quarters of the total turnover is in furnishing section and no woman could deal with furniture and carpets. They also reject moving men from the Scarborough store to the York store as this would leave Scarborough short staffed. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/1377]
