Summary of case: Knowles is a partner in his retired father's business. His brother, also a partner, has already enlisted and Knowles is the sole provider for his aged parents and his sisters. They currently are the only contractors of their kind around York and have several contracts to complete. He has joined the Volunteer Training Corps and teaches at Ampleforth College one day a week, teaching drawing. The local tribunal and military representative considered the business to be 'one of a character that it is not essential to keep up at the present time'.
