Summary of case: Reed had been granted three previous exemptions by the Thirsk Local Tribunal, each contested by the military representative. Sowerby managed two farms totalling 286 acres, using two men and two boys. He listed his stock and crops: 270 tons of potatoes and 64 tons of hay and clover to be delivered, and 9 working horses, 3 young horses and 65 head of cattle, 190 sheep, 19 pigs. ‘I am exceedingly short of labour and do not consider that a substitute would be able to do this man’s work.’
