He had been examined by the military and found unfit for service on 8 Dec 1915 but in Sep 1916 was examined again and passed for general service by the York medical board. He was examined privately on 29 Sep 1916 and certified unfit for service. Early in December 1917 the local tribunal ordered him to be examined by the central medical board, London, which passed him as fit for service in class B1.His father appealed against this decision.
