DescriptionNorth Riding Appeal tribunal number: 2416
Appeal against conscription of: Francis Jameson
Age: 31
Address: 6 Skeldergate, York
Occupation: Hairdresser
Local tribunal: York City Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for Appeal: d) serious hardship
Appellant: George Crombie, solicitor, on behalf of Francis Jameson
Summary of case: He originally applied for exemption on the grounds that this was a one man business and could not be sustained if he were called up on the grant he would obtain. The local tribunal deferred the case while an appeal was made to the Civil Liabilities Committee for a larger grant. In the meantime, and at the local tribunal's suggestion, he obtained a daytime job in munitions enabling his hairdressing business to continue in the evenings and Saturday afternoons. However, they then decided not to grant his application. His appeal to the North Riding Appeal tribunal pointed out that he was now trained in munitions work and therefore a skilled worker.
