The local tribunal granted exemption to 1 February 1917 conditional on his joining and remaining an active member of the North Riding Volunteer Regiment. The North Riding Appeal Tribunal dismissed his case but he subsequently wrote to say that he was a tanner by trade and wished to re-open his appeal on those grounds. The North Riding Appeal Tribunal refused.
