Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 2321 Appeal against conscription of: John Andrew Wolpert Age: 22 Address: 59, Nelson Street, South Bank Occupation: Pork butcher Local tribunal: Eston Urban District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship Appellant: Annie Wolpert, mother and employer Summary of case: Originally he had been granted an exemption by the local tribunal but the military representative had appealed and had this certificate of exemption withdrawn or varied. The appeal was made to the County Tribunal by WolpertÂ’s mother stating that she had a family of nine to support with her husband now having been interned for two years. This is the eldest son, who offered his services at the outbreak of War but was rejected on medical grounds, her second son had recently been taken to an asylum and the third son, 15, has just started work. As a result she was compelled to close the business leaving her with no financial aid apart for the wages of her young son. She asked for her eldest son to stay at home and support the family whilst working in munitions. The local tribunal had stated that there were too many butchers in South Bank, and since she is closing the business then he could go. They maintained that since he would be unskilled he will be best in the Army and earning more money. The County Tribunal decided to direct that a certificate of exemption be issued to the 30 June conditional upon his taking up whole time employment in munitions work, to be approved by Eston Local tribunal, on grounds of domestic hardship. Letter from Clerk to Middlesbrough Justices' Office stating that he had begun work on 2 January at Boletton Vaughan & Co's Works at South Bank working at ragging rolls in the Roll Turners Shop. He said this was satisfactory, useful and necessary work. Supporting evidence: Yes Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 22 Dec 1916. Allowed to 30 June 1917 conditional on taking up work in munition works. |
