Summary of case: The local tribunal had previously granted him exemption which the military representative had appealed against and that appeal had been successful. This appeal was against that decision. He stated that he had about the largest trade in South Bank and if he was called up very serious financial loss will result and he would have to close his business. He felt that other butchers doing less trade had received exemption. The local tribunal said that there were too many butchers left in South Bank, seven of them master butchers of military age. They analysed them for age, married status, number of children and found this man the youngest of them all. They stated that other master butchers were exempted to 1st July and some of these men were refused exemption. He had asked for exemption over the Christmas period and this was granted. The County tribunal dismissed the appeal but said that he was not to be called up until 1 February 1917.
