Summary of case: Had previously been given exemption to 1 December 1916. He was offering to undertake mining, munitions or farming work so that he could be at home and keeping the family together. His three brothers were regular soldiers the youngest having been wounded twice and lamed for life. Of his two sisters one was ill and hence dependent on his widowed mother as was a ten year old granddaughter who she had brought up. His mother therefore had limited financial assistance and needed him at home to support the family both financially and physically. Thornill stated that ‘our home’ would be broken up if he was sent.
