Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act 1916
Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship
Appellant: George Henry Bellerby
Summary of case: He appealed on grounds of domestic hardship as his wife was in a delicate and weak state. A letter was produced to confirm her state of health by Dr E S Angrove who also stated that she suffers from a weak heart and "has been near death on several occasions". They have three young children. He stated that he was prepared to take up munition work. The local tribunal could not see that there were sufficient reasons for this man not serving his country and in their opinion the domestic grounds were not sufficiently urgent to make it unreasonable for him to be spared. A previous exemption they had given him was to allow him to make the necessary arrangements to leave his home. In his appeal to the County Tribunal he said that he had no friends with whom to leave his family.
