Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act

Summary of case: George Kettlewell had been a serving soldier from 1 April 1911 in the Yorkshire Hussars. He completed 4 years and 39 days as a member of the Territorial Force. He did not complete form E624 which would have required him to fulfil his Imperial Service obligation for service overseas. As a result he would be discharged and according to the War Office would then be subject to the Military Service Act. Both the local and county tribunals considered his case before he was discharged and hence a civilian. There was therefore considerable correspondence after the judgement between multiple parties. The original appeal was by his father who had a large farm and insufficient suitable men. The appeal to the County Tribunal was by the military representative Henry Rob who stated that as a trained soldier it is more to the national interests that he remains in the Army than in a civil occupation. The County Tribunal allowed the military appeal.
