Summary of case: Milner owns and manages a large drapery business in Leyburn. All his savings are invested in the business and he employs staff to the value of £160 per year. He is responsible for all the stock keeping, buying, bookkeeping and providing quotations for customers. There is a great deal of heavy lifting involved so the work is unsuitable for a woman. Cyril has three brothers already serving and one remaining brother is managing the family business in Hawes, he also supports his parents due to his father's poor health. Initial six month exemption granted by local tribunal and subsequently extended by a further six months. Military representative states that no serious hardship would ensue and that there are other drapery businesses in Leyburn so the public would not be inconvenienced.
