Summary of case: Mr Duck states that all capital was sunk in the business and financial embarrassment to his wife and family would ensue if he was called up. It was impossible to obtain help, and he has a delicate wife and boy. There are several contracts in hand. If work could be found in munitions he would willingly accept it. The military representative, Graham Craig, objected to the decision of the local tribunal: ‘The man has already had three months in which to make arrangements, if he has taken on any contracts during that time it is his own fault. Painters are not a necessity to the community and can be spared.’
