DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 2203
Appeal against conscription of: Thomas Anthony Newham
Age: 25
Address: Gordon Street, Scarborough
Occupation: Butcher and farm assistant
Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d)serious hardship, g) exempt occupation
Appellant: T H Newham, father and employer
Summary of case: Appellant owns a large farm and butchery business which requires the assistance of his son in the capacity of sole manager of his father's shop and market Hall. Three men had already been called up so his son is the only person left to do the killing of the animals and salting the meat with his father's secret process which the father does not want to share with anyone else. The local tribunal stated that Thomas had a brother who was not fit for military service and had been given an exemption until 31 March 1917. They felt that one of the brothers should go to military service at once. Since Thomas was not in a certified occupation and hardship would be comparatively slight he should go to war. 'In fact the Tribunal's opinion the appellant ought to consider that he has been fortunate in retaining the services of both sons until now.'
