Summary of case: Green stated to the local tribunal that his business was a certified one – market gardener providing foodstuffs for sale to the public in Sleights and Whitby. He works the 21/2 – 3 acres by hand and has not-one to assist him. If he was called to the 'colours' it would be impossible for his wife to continue the garden for him resulting in the place going out of cultivation which would not be in the national interests. He was granted a temporary exemption to 1 Jul 1917. The military representative appealed against this, stating that it was not in the national interest that this man should remain in his present occupation but should be engaged in military service.
