Summary of case: Mr Peacock, Verity's business partner, had said he could not manage without him. He had already lost eight employees to the army and he had to do extra work because his traveller had been called up the previous week. He had advertised for a replacement and not had a single applicant. Verity also submitted evidence of why he could not be spared without suffering financial loss. When he attested, the local tribunal had given him total exemption in June 1916, but this had been withdrawn. Verity then said he had borrowed a lot of money and would thus suffer financial loss if called up; also two more men in the business had been called up. The girls are willing but quite incompetent. The military representative appealed against the decision of the local tribunal.
