He had also been rejected on medical grounds by the Police 14 years earlier. His wife was ill and a somnambulist, who needed nursing care which could not be afforded if he joined the forces. He also had to look after his mother who had no other sons to look after her as they were all in the army. The local tribunal said that his appeal was out of order as his employers had said they had no objection when he applied under the Derby Scheme.
