Summary of case: ‘My nephew, Thomas William Collinson who is also joint tenant was recently refused exemption by the [local] tribunal on the ground that his brother, the man now appealed for and who is fit for home service only could leave his situation at Darlington and come home to help on the farm and thus release his brother for the army. The man appealed for, has accordingly left Darlington and is living at home. It is absolutely impossible for me to manage the farm alone, as I am unable to do hardly any work. I am 61 years of age and been invalid almost all my life. We have occupied Nook farm for 35 years and pay annually £87 – 10 [shillings] in rent besides rates, wages etc.’
