Summary of case: Slater had set himself up in business as a drug store proprietor four years previously in a poor area of York, using capital of £400. He did a large trade with poor people who in most cases could not afford a doctor. In addition most of his relatives were in the army and his mother whom he supported was dangerously ill. The Civil Claims Commission had offered £10 per annum to close up his shop for the duration, which he considered grossly insufficient to cover his costs. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/1276]
