He did a large trade with poor people who in most cases could not afford a doctor. In addition most of his relatives were in the army and his mother whom he supported was dangerously ill. The Civil Claims Commission had offered £10 per annum to close up his shop for the duration, which he considered grossly insufficient to cover his costs.
