Summary of case: Hawkswell ran his elderly and infirm parents' antique business single handedly. It comprised two shops a few doors apart on Stonegate, York. On 4 April 1916, the local tribunal had allowed an exemption to 1 Oct 1916. On 30 Sep 1916 Hawkswell applied to the local tribunal for a further extension, which was granted until 13 Dec 1916, to allow time to make arrangements. There was some confusion over the date and there is an exchange of letters between Crombie’s (solicitors) and the clerk to the tribunal. On 23 Nov 1916 Crombie’s applied for leave to appeal to the Central Tribunal, with evidence as to Hawkswell’s parents' ill-health and support from an MP who knew him.
