Summary of case: Watson and his father, Nawton Watson, work a farm of 100 acres together. The father says that his son is ‘very dwarfish and is more beneficially employed on the land that he would be in military service.’ The military representative is appealing against the decision of the local tribunal to grant exemption until 1 Mar 1917 on the grounds that Watson was not indispensable and not in a certified occupation. There is correspondence between Watson's solicitor, Richard Jennings, and HG Thornley, clerk to the North Riding Tribunal, in which it would appear that a recruiting officer suggested that Watson had grounds to appeal, but the military representative blocked further appeals.
