The military representative found out that he was actually away from the farm for most of the time acting as a cattle dealer and had the decision overturned on 18 Oct 1916. Kendrew appealed to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal, who decided that there was sufficient labour available on the 200 acre mixed arable and stock farm (two men over conscription age, two youths and a 25 year old brother) and dismissed the appeal on 13 Nov 1916.
