Summary of case: The local tribunal had granted exemption to 1 Oct 1917. His employer sent a letter to the clerk of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal: ‘We trust you will accept the appeal to be heard as Harrison has made a complete muddle, having enlisted after he sent the appeal in to the Town Clerk. He received the usual form from the military, stating he must report himself as his time expired on 1 Oct 1016. He, in ignorance presented himself to the recruiting officer, and was made a soldier.’ He is deaf and described by his employer as “very dull, little better than half-witted. His commanding officer had granted him ten days' leave to enable the situation to be resolved.
