Summary of case: ‘At the outbreak of war, our entire staff including both partners of the firm joined the colours on 6 Aug 1914, leaving a new man in charge with one boy, I myself was discharged through ill health, and Mr Lofthouse was discharged through injuries which he received in France, the rest of our permanent staff are still serving in France. The Mechanic, Witts, for whom we appeal is absolutely the only man we have left, he is 33 years of age, married and father of three children. If this man has to go it means we cannot carry on.’
