Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 1970 Appeal against conscription of: Joseph Fearnley Age: 40 Address: 111 High Street, Brotton Occupation: Grocer etc Local tribunal: Skelton and Brotton Urban District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act 1916 Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship Appellant: Joseph Fearnley Summary of case: The business is carried on at present by my wife, myself and two girls. The bulk of the buying falls to me and the others have not sufficient experience to qualify them to carry on this part of the business. Under these circumstances if I am called up for military service my business so far as I can see will have to be wound up, and this would involve me in very serious hardship as I should then have lost a living for myself and my wife which has taken nine years in the making. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 4 Nov 1916. Allowed Exemption to 31 Mar 1917. |
