Summary of Case: Father and employer has been seriously ill since Dec 1915 and has not been able to leave his bedroom. and due to the size of his mixed farm of 205 acres would not be able to manage if his son is enlisted. Frank Smirthwaite believes he is in a reserved occupation. Thomas Smirthwaite states his other son is serving in KitchenerÂ’s army. The local tribunal had granted a temporary exemption to 23 Nov 1916 in the hope that female labour could be available. A further application could be made if no labour was available.
