Appeal against conscription of: Robert Farrow
Age: 27
Address: Market Place, Stokesley
Occupation: Butcher and auctioneer
Local tribunal: Stokesley Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship
Appellant: A E Kitching, Military Representative
Summary of case: Farrow is a single man and not in a certified occupation. ‘The military representatives do not consider him to be indispensable to the carrying on of the business……The mother herself carries on the retail trade in the butcher’s shop and has done so to a considerable extent of years, and is quite capable in that respect. There are several other butchers and slaughtermen in business at Stokesley and there would not be the slightest difficulty in getting the slaughtering done. The auctioneering business mentioned is now in a very small compass indeed and cannot be regarded, at the present crisis, as in any way important. This case has been the cause of a good deal of adverse comment and criticism from married men.’
