Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 1897 Appeal against conscription of: Arthur Trueman Age: 37 Address: Golden Lion Hotel, Leyburn Occupation: Licensed victualler Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative Summary of case: The local tribunal justified their decision for granting a temporary exemption to 28 Dec 1916 stating; Trueman is 37 years of age, married, and the sole proprietor of the Golden Lion Hotel at Leyburn. There is a seven years unexpired lease and at present the business is being carried on by applicant [Freeman] and he has to get boys and an old Belgian man to help on the market day in looking after the posting business. The hotel is much frequented by the farmers and business people on the market days and it would not be possible for the wife to manage alone. Attempts have been made to get male assistance during the last two months but without result. The tribunal were satisfied that serious hardship would ensue if applicant is called up to military service, owing to his financial and business obligations and granted temporary exemption to the 28 Dec 1916. The military representative appealed against this decision, stating: That no special or extraordinary hardship is shown to ensue. That temporary exemption for three months having already been granted it is inexpedient that he should continue to be retained in his present occupation. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 31 Oct 1916. Dismissed. Military appeal |
