Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 1896 Appeal against conscription of: John Kirk Age: 38 Address: Market Place, Leyburn Occupation: General draper Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative Summary of case: Sole proprietor of business. Married with two children. Originally rejected by the military but since passed for Home Service. The local tribunal granted an exemption conditional on him remaining in his current occupation as there would be serious hardship due to exceptional business obligations, should he be called up. The military representative disagreed and appealed: That no special extraordinary hardship is shown to ensue. This case is opposed on the ground that the hardship shown is not sufficient to warrant a permanent exemption considering how similar cases have been dealt with. Temporary exemption would not be opposed.
