Summary of case: Duffield had appealed to the local tribunal on the grounds that he had invested ‘my entire capital [£100] and the best years of my life’ in his business and would not be able to rebuild it. His application was refused because he had only recently set up the business. In a letter to the local tribunal he explained his position at some length, but the letter arrived a day late. At the North Riding Appeal Tribunal he was granted one month's exemption conditional upon his taking up work in munitions within one month. There is a further letter explaining that he had found such employment, but the company did not want him to start for a month by which time their new machinery would be installed. He requested a further month, but was refused and told him to look elsewhere. This last decision is recorded in a letter, not on the official forms.
