The military representative had noted on 10 Aug 1916 that Hardcastle had not complied with the instruction and requested that the exemption be withdrawn. This occurred on 22 Aug 1916. In a note to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal, Hardcastle explained that he had been handed over by the Police to the Military Authority on 2 Sep 1916, and that he had been medically rejected on 4 Sep 1916. As such, he saw no point in appearing before the tribunal. He further noted to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal that his opinion of the Military Service Act and the war in general, have not in any way changed
. Also in the instructions sent down to tribunals it is stated that the exemption granted, shall be the minimum which will meet the scruples of the applicant. - Those scruples, in my case have not yet been met.
