Summary of case: Abbott had already been exempted service three times by York City. His widowed mother was in very poor health, a fatty heart, and lived at her home. When Abbott was working a night shift he had to engage the services of a young lady to sit with her, which cost money. Abbott was paying his mother 25 shillings a week, which any Army allowance would not replicate. Abbott had a sister who lived in Newcastle, where she looked after her sickly husband and young children: mother did not want to live with her. The shock of leaving her home would kill her. Abbott was willing to undertake any work in the national interest - munitions had been suggested. His elder brother was serving in France.
