Summary of case: Young was the third of four brothers and two sisters. His brothers and one brother-in-law were serving in the Army. Young's widowed mother was an invalid and one sister cared for her during the day. Young had to stay with her overnight to calm his mother in the event of further Zeppelin raids, her house having been bombed already and her nerves being shot. His brothers had agreed he should remain at home as he had the most influence over his mother. His employers also requested exemption because Young, alongside a 41 year old man, was the sole remaining clerk. He was involved in work related to the 'Magisterial Court' which 'is obviously not work on which girls could be engaged'. Crombie had also taken responsibility for clerk's work from another firm, so their clerks could enlist.[See also NRCC/CL 9/1/2645, NRCC/CL 9/1/4044, NRCC/CL 9/1/4618, NRCC/CL 9/1/5634]
