Summary of case: The local tribunal had granted exemption to 18 July 1916 and dismissed a further application. Staples had said he had four brothers in the forces; one killed on 1 Jul 1916, and felt this meant he should have further consideration. He mended shoes for the area and for the army but, as the troops were soon to move away during winter, the tribunal saw no reason why he should not join the army. He had made no attempt to find a replacement and, being near York, it would be easy for him to do so
