Age: 39
Address: East Witton, Middleham
Occupation: Farmer, stone and monumental mason

Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship
Appellant: William Robert Peacock
Summary of case: On 30 Mar 1916 the local tribunal had granted four months' temporary exemption. A subsequent appeal had been adjourned for a medical examination. Peacock had said he was the only son of his widowed mother and also supported his sister, so his being called up would cause hardship. Also his health was poor, he had earlier suffered a nervous breakdown and still suffered recurrences. This was confirmed by his doctor. The medical examination (which Peacock said was ‘rushed’ and only two doctors were present) passed him as fit but Peacock said he was not. He also said there had been confusion over his age, the local tribunal had been told he was 29 and really he was 39. However, the Clerk said this would not have affected the local tribunal's decision.
