Summary of case: Henry Stanley had been granted exemption in Mar 1916 for three months, which expired on 23 Jun 1916, after the passing of the Military Service Act. His appeal, dated 10 Aug 1916, had been refused because it should have been made within two weeks of the passing of the Act, not two months. In his appeal, Matthew Stanley said he would suffer ‘very serious financial hardship’ if his son Henry was called up. Stanley Snr suffered from bad rheumatism, two of his sons had already been called up and his daughter, who had been ill, had, by Dec 1916, become a tram conductor to free up someone else for the service – he said ‘I do not think my family have done so bad’. He only had his son Henry to manage the farm work. The Clerk to the local tribunal noted the earlier exemption and said the North Riding Appeal Tribunal must decide, ‘the point is not free from doubt’.
