Summary of case: This man has been with me over 13 years. I only have one other man and he cannot do the work this man does. It requires an experienced and strong man. My other man has a rupture and has been refused by the military. He could not do the coopering nor the box making. I have a large business; my turnover is about £7,000 a year. I have employed four men previously during the herring season and generally three out of the herring season and have now to do the work with the two men. I could not get women to do the work. They could not do the lifting nor the gutting, apart from the coopering and box making. I pay Hutton 25/- to 30/- a week, and he gets the liver money. I specially need the man during the herring season which will not be over till the beginning of Oct. Moreover this man's trade is exempted and I respectfully submit that I am entitled to legally claim his exemption. A fish porter is an exempted trade. Part of his duties is to bring fish from the sales to the packing stand. They are packed in boxes of from 6 to 10 stones in weight. Then he has to get the fish on to the carts when packed, and they weigh about 2 cwt., then. The man is married, is 32 years of age; no children.
