Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 1561 Appeal against conscription of: Alfred William Schofield Age: 25 Address: 6 Nares Street, Scarborough Occupation: Grocer and provisions dealer Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship Appellant: Alfred William Schofield Summary of case: Serious hardship would ensue if I were called up for army service owing to the fact that I am the sole proprietor of the business upon which the support of my family exclusively depends. Serious hardship would ensue if I were called up for army service owing to my exceptional business obligations and domestic position. I have been in business on my own account for over five years. I have built up a good business and the whole of my capital is invested in the business which I could not dispose of at the present time. My wife is expecting to be confirmed early in December. I hold my premises on Lease of which about 3 1/2 years are unexpired. The rent and rates amount to £43.11.6. I submit that my business is clearly a one man business within the meaning of the regulations. My mother who was left a widow in June last has a grocers business and depends upon me for assistance and advice in connection therewith. My only brother was in Australia when the War broke out and is in the Australians. My only sister's husband is in France with the forces.
