Summary of case: Herbert states ‘Case for tribunal [County]. Insufficient facts on domestic claim.’ on 30 March 1916 Fox had been granted a month’s exemption on domestic grounds, ‘and my claim on conscientious grounds was postponed.’ His domestic position had become worse and his wife was pregnant. He asks for a further postponement of his call up. He asks for an absolute exemption on conscientious grounds. The case papers include an envelope with four statements from men who have known Fox for 13, 15 and three years. As well as one man who has known Fox from boyhood. The York City Council Tribunal gave Fox a further exemption to 6 Nov 1916 on domestic grounds ‘(Conscientious reasons adjourned)’ In his answers to the ten questions asked of all conscientious objectors from May 1916, Fox quotes Tolstoy: ‘The only way to stop war, is to stop war,’ Conscientious objection is on socialist not religious grounds., as ‘I know pf no religious body good enough to satisfy my ethical standard. I am a Humanist and Determinist.’
