Summary of case: Mr Sill already had two sons who had joined the army and felt it was reasonable to ask that this one stayed to assist him with his stock and land. He was supplying both the army and navy with milk and it was impossible to manage it all himself. The local tribunal in evidence to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stated that an older man or woman might be found to do the work or that a ‘soldier might be obtained for the purpose’. The appeal to the North Riding Appeal tribunal was on the same basis.
