Summary of case: States that he is a miller's cartman and horseman working at father's mill. Father also had a farm of 35 acres with 11 beasts including four milk cows, four draught horses, 16 pigs. Father states he is 71 years and cannot manage with two men. Local tribunal granted temporary exemption to 17 Sep 1916 no further appeal. Local tribunal evidence to North Riding Appeal Tribunal is that there are four sons Not stated of which have joined the army. A married brother is also at the mill and with the assistance of female labour with the stock then they felt that he, as a single man, he ought to join up. Father repeats appeal to North Riding Appeal Tribunal; he is the only miller in a very large area and grinds a large quantity of wheat for flour and meal. He has had to give up work due to infirmity.
