Summary of case: He is a farm horseman working on father's 225 acre farm. Local tribunal allowed temporary exemption to 17 Oct 1916 no further appeal. They stated on the North Riding Appeal Tribunal papers that the farmer has two sons and as no one from this family has joined the army he ought to go leaving his eldest brother. The exemption they granted was to cover the harvest. The appeal by G Lawson listed that he had 225 acres, 70 of which were arable; he had 12 horses, eight milk cows, 35 beasts, 105 sheep, ten pigs, poultry etc. He stated that before the war he had two other men in addition to his sons, he had advertised to replace them without success. Stated that he could not possibly carry on a large farm like his with only one son.
